Halloween/ Harvest Tablecovers

Kids adore sponging. It's simple, not too messy, and highly effective, once you get the technique down. Perfect for a Halloween party, this paper tablecloth can become a group event while you're cooking up Frankenstein's Toes, or make it a pre-party project. Use child-safe acrylics and mix with daring—especially beautiful on multi-colored leaves.

  Materials:

Download and print patterns

9 X 12 paper drop cloth cover, white or natural (available at hardware/paint store) or wrapping paper

thin sponges (the less pore, the better)

children-safe acrylic paint

exacto knife

cold glue gun

straight pins

round paintbrush

paper plates (for each color of paint)

  Instructions:

1.  Download and print our pumpkin, ghost, and bat patterns, or choose our harvest pattern.

2.  Place a pattern over a sponge and pin into place, then cut out shape with an exacto knife. Repeat with other patterns.

3. Hand-glue chopstick to each sponge so you can hold it without getting paint on your fingers.

4. Lay your paper over a work table so it is smooth and flat.

5. On a paper plate, put desired color of paint and "shmoosh" sponge fully into the puddle.

6. Stamp the pumpkin sponge in selected spots on tablecloth, tapping gently so that paint adheres. Repeat with other patterns to create a design. Dip the bat sponge in black paint and stamp onto paper. Dip the ghost sponge in white paint and stamp.

7. Let tablecloth dry about 20 minutes before proceeding.

8. To complete the pumpkin, dip a round paintbrush in green paint and make a stroke for the stem.

9. To complete ghost, paint in black eyes and a howling mouth. (Note: on white cloth, skip the ghost)

10. To complete bat, paint the eyes blue.

Reminder: Make sure you know the measurements of your party table so you can get the proper-sized paper drop cloth. Tablecloths should hang ten to twelve inches over the edge of the table.

Tip: To create a pearly effect, put a coat of iridescent pearl (coarse) of Golden Acrylic™ paint mixed together with any color.
