Kitty Genovese was murdered shortly after the Kennedy assasination. Americans were still reeling from the shock of that. The model 10 years later was murdered shortly after the Nixon regime. No explanation needed! And this most recent episode is at a time of the lowest morale in history with the exception of the aftermath of 911.
