Renaissance Festivals - Are they for kids?
One of my son’s favorite annual things to look forward to are Renaissance Festivals. He saves all year to buy the costumes, swords and shields to create an authentic look for the Renfest.
Year after year, we get dressed up in our lord and lady outfits, pay the hefty fee to get into the Fest and actually have a great time!
However, everytime we go, I am conflicted by the message he is receiving. The shows are full of bawdy and vulgar humor. The attendees are often scantily dressed and tatooed to the eyebrows. there is much revelry and DRINKING going on all through the day.
When he was younger, it all went over his head. But now that he is a young teenager, I worry that he is receiving the message that I approve of this display, because I continue to take him to the Festivals. Of course, we discuss behavior dos and donts! But hey, my parents spoke to me about things they disapproved of also, (and look at what happened to me) LOL.
