Is your new clothes dryer safe?

After spending a huge amount of money purchasing a new clothes dryer and having it professionally installed by the retailer’s contractor, you would think you would be getting a reliable machine that is safely hooked up. Right?

Maybe not. Over 15,000 fires a year are caused by improperly installed dryer vents. The machine might be perfectly good, but the dryer vent is a ticking time bomb.

You would think that it can’t be too hard to hook up your new clothes dryer to the exhaust vent … and it’s not. Which is why most professional dryer installers are nothing more than basic delivery boys - not actual “appliance installers.” They unload the dryer, stick it in the spot next to the washing machine and attach the dryer vent … which is usually the one left over from the old dryer. If an old vent is not available, they pull out the handy, inexpensive new vent that you purchased when you bought the dryer.

Of course, when you bought the new vent, no one let you look at the appliance manual to see what type of vent you need. Chances are that the manual specifically states that you should NEVER use a flexible dryer vent due to its inherent fire hazard. Check out the video links below to see why. They will get your attention.

In the meantime, be assured that you may be able do something beyond just paying for and installing a new dryer vent. You can participate in a class action lawsuit intended to force a change in the dryer installation practices nationwide so that families like ours can be safe from this hidden hazard.
